The Supreme Court on Thursday announced it would expedite review of President Joe Biden’s student loan cancellation program to oral arguments in its February session.
The program, which went live just months ago, has garnered multiple legal challenges that have quickly approached the high court, temporarily blocking the program even after the application went live and garnered more than 25 million applicants. Last month, the Biden administration asked the justices to intervene and allow its program to continue while legal challenges proceeded.

On Thursday, the Supreme Court agreed to take up the case on an expedited basis but left in place for now a lower court’s decision to halt implementation after the justices themselves rejected requests on at least two occasions to block the Biden administration’s move.
The program, which would cancel $10,000 for borrowers making $125,000, or $250,000 for married couples, and $20,000 for those who also received federal Pell Grants, was estimated to cost up to $400 billion and wipe clean the student loan debt for an estimated 40 million borrowers. Those challenging the program, including multiple Republican-led states, have argued that it exceeds Biden’s authority as president.
